David W. Chia, M.D. FACS MBA

David W. Chia, M.D. FACS MBA is a board-certified ophthalmologist who joined Irvine Eye Medical Group in 2006. He completed his 3-year ophthalmology training program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore where he served as Chief Resident. Prior to that, he finished a transitional medicine internship at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He graduated medical school from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania where he delivered the medical school commencement address (which you can read on pages 8 and 9 of Penn State Medicine Volume 13 Issue 2 from 2002). Dr. David Chia received his Masters in Business Administration from the University of California, Irvine Merage School of Management and attended Rice University in Houston, Texas for undergraduate studies in Biochemistry.

Dr. David Chia is a volunteer clinical instructor of surgery for the UC Irvine ophthalmology program.  He is on staff at Hoag Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. David Chia is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He performs hundreds of operations a year including cataract, refractive, eyelid, and cosmetic surgeries. He is well-regarded in the community as an excellent teacher, astute clinician, and skilled surgeon.  He has served on the Board of Directors of the Orange County Society of Ophthalmology from 2014-2023 and served as President from 2022-2023.

Though much of his higher education is based on the East Coast, Dr. David Chia is pleased to return to his hometown, where his family has been since 1976, to join his mother, Dr. Li-Li Chia, in ophthalmology practice to serve the eye care needs of the Southern California community. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. 

Dr. David Chia resides in Irvine along with his wife and three daughters.

Li-Li S. Chia, M.D. Ph.D.

Li-Li S. Chia, M.D., Ph.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist who founded the Irvine Eye Medical Group in 1990. The practice quickly gained a reputation for competent and compassionate eye care. 

Dr. Li-Li Chia attended medical school and completed her ophthalmology residency training at the University of California, Irvine. Her undergraduate studies were completed at National Taiwan University. Dr. Li-Li Chia also completed a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at UC Irvine. She served as health sciences clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine from 1987 to 2010.


The Chia family first moved to Irvine in 1976. Dr. Li-Li Chia is mother to two sons, David and Peter. She is also a proud grandmother.

Elizabeth Shen, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist and Corneal and Refractive Surgery specialist. She received her undergraduate degree (graduated Magna Cum Laude) at Harvard University. Dr. Shen earned an M.D. with Distinction from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of California, Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute. She then completed a Cornea, Refractive, and External Disease Fellowship at Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health & Science University, where she was awarded "Fellow of the Year" for her dedication to resident education.  Dr. Shen also still serves as a volunteer clinical instructor of surgery for the UC Irvine ophthalmology program.

Dr. Shen specializes in refractive cataract surgery (including femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery), dry eye disease, corneal transplants, as well as corneal and external diseases of the eye. She also specializes in the latest technique for corneal transplantation -- Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). Dr. Shen has authored many peer-reviewed articles in the field of corneal transplantation. She is also a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Board of Ophthalmology, and American Academy of Ophthalmology. She also has an active interest in using social media (Instagram @socialeyesmd) as a platform for ophthalmic teaching and public education.

Dr. Shen lives with her husband and daughter in Irvine and is always looking for the perfect bite or cup of coffee.
